Shooting Usable Photos in Crawl Spaces and Bad Light

The evidence is almost always in the worst-lit place on the property. The default phone camera behavior is close to the worst possible approach to it — and the fix is mostly about where the light comes from, not how much of it there is.

Rot, corrosion, failed flashing, cracked framing, standing water, disconnected ducts — the conditions worth photographing live in crawl spaces, attics, wall cavities, and the two feet behind a water heater. Those are the same places where a phone camera performs worst, and the photos come back unusable: a washed-out patch in the middle, black everywhere else, no texture in the thing you were trying to show. Almost all of that is a lighting problem, solvable with simple equipment and a change in technique.

Read the safety section before the technique section. A true confined space — limited entry and exit, with the potential for a hazardous atmosphere — can kill in under a minute, and has killed people who went in to help someone already down. That is not a DIY job. Details below.

Why the phone flash is the wrong tool

Your phone's flash is a very small, very hard light source positioned a few millimeters from the lens. Both properties work against you.

It is on-axis. Light traveling out along the line the lens looks down means every shadow falls directly behind whatever cast it, hidden from the camera. Shadow is what your eye reads as texture and depth; remove it and a rippled, swollen, or delaminated surface photographs as a flat discolored patch. The most common complaint about documentation photos — "I can't tell what I'm looking at" — is usually this.

It falls off brutally. Intensity drops with the square of distance, so a joist two feet away blows out white while the sill plate six feet behind it goes black. In a crawl space you are always shooting into a deep scene, exactly the geometry that breaks a point flash.

It reflects straight back. Dust, moisture droplets, insulation fibers, and vapor barrier plastic sit between you and the subject, and an on-axis source lights every particle brilliantly. That is where the floating white orbs and the milky haze come from.

Get the light off the lens axis

The fix is to move the light away from the camera. Even a foot or two of separation changes the result dramatically, because shadows start falling sideways where the camera can see them. That means a separate positionable light and the phone's flash off entirely — hold it out to one side at arm's length, or better, clip it somewhere and shoot with both hands.

Raking light is the case worth learning. Put the source almost parallel to the surface, grazing across it rather than pointing at it. Every bump, ripple, blister, tide line, and hairline crack throws a long shadow and becomes obvious; the same wall lit head-on looks smooth. It is what makes drywall swelling, floor cupping, and stucco cracking photograph the way they look in person, and it takes five seconds to set up.

For depth, use two sources — one placed past your subject shining back toward you, plus one near you. The far light separates the subject from the background and stops everything collapsing into a black void behind the first joist.

Rechargeable work light

A COB-style panel with a magnetic base or hook is the workhorse — it sticks to a duct or pipe, stays put, and frees both hands for the camera. More useful than a headlamp, which by definition points on-axis with your eyes. Carry two; the second placed deep in the space is what gives a crawl space photo depth.

One more lighting note: do not mix color temperatures. A cool LED plus a warm incandescent fixture in one frame gives a blue half and an orange half, and auto white balance splits the difference badly. That matters whenever the condition is a color — rust versus staining, active growth versus old discoloration, a tide line. Kill the other sources, and include a plain white object as a neutral reference if the exact color is load-bearing.

Bracing: the other half of low light

In a dark space the camera compensates by holding the shutter open longer and raising sensitivity. Long shutter plus handheld equals motion blur; high sensitivity equals noise — the mushy, speckled texture that erases hairline cracks and early corrosion. More light is the real fix, and bracing is the rest of it, in order of effectiveness:

If your camera app allows manual control, lock sensitivity lower and let the shutter run long on a braced camera. A stationary subject in a stationary frame does not care how long the exposure is, and the reduction in noise is substantial.

Wall cavities, duct runs, and everything you cannot fit into

Some of the most valuable documentation is inside places no camera-carrying human fits: a stud bay, a chase, a duct run, behind a tub surround. That is what a borescope is for — a small camera head on a semi-rigid cable with its own ring of light, fed through a hole. What separates a useful cavity image from a useless one:

For wall cavities, duct runs, and drain lines. Look for a semi-rigid cable long enough for your typical run, adjustable LED brightness, and an articulating head or side-view mirror attachment. A waterproof head matters more than people expect — you will use it in wet cavities.

Keep the lens clean — this is not a minor detail

Crawl spaces and attics are dust, fiberglass, and vapor. A film on the lens does not look like a smudge in the photo; it looks like fog, veiling glare, and starbursts around every light source. It destroys contrast globally — exactly the quality you need to show texture — and it is the most common reason a set comes back hazy.

Wipe the lens before every shot sequence, not once on the way in, and carry several cloths in a sealed bag; one that has ridden in a crawl space pocket for an hour is now a sanding pad. Blow the grit off first, because dragging a hard particle across coated glass is how lenses get scratched. Temperature is the other one: a cold phone brought into a warm, humid space fogs outside and sometimes inside the lens stack, so give it a few minutes to equalize.

Confined spaces: know which one you are in

A ventilated residential crawl space you can enter freely and back out of is uncomfortable but ordinary work. A permit-required confined space is a different category entirely, and the distinction is not about how small it is.

The hazards that matter are atmospheric and invisible: oxygen displaced by another gas, hydrogen sulfide or methane in a sewer or tank, carbon monoxide from a generator or a vehicle running nearby, solvent vapor pooling in a low space. None announce themselves, and the failure mode is loss of consciousness in seconds, not a warning headache. The pattern that kills most often is the rescue attempt — someone goes down, a coworker goes in after them unprotected, and the same atmosphere takes them too. If someone is down in a space, call emergency services and keep everyone else out.

Treat as off-limits without proper procedure, training, and equipment: manholes, vaults, sewers, septic tanks, sumps, silos, storage tanks, pits, boilers, enterable ducts, and any void with restricted entry and exit or a possible hazardous atmosphere. Proper procedure means atmospheric testing before and during entry, forced ventilation, an attendant outside, retrieval equipment, and a rescue plan that does not depend on the attendant entering. That is a trained crew with a permit program, not a documentation task you take on yourself.

For ordinary crawl spaces and attics: tell someone where you are and when you expect to be out, keep your exit path clear and know where the second one is, wear eye protection and a respirator rated for the dust and biological material you expect, watch for standing water near electrical, and back out immediately if you get lightheaded or the air smells wrong. Knee pads and gloves matter too — the shots people skip are the last ones, skipped because their knees hurt.

Before you climb out

Two things before you climb out, because coming back is expensive. Review your frames at full zoom rather than as thumbnails — blur and haze are invisible small and obvious at 100%. And shoot the context frames: the access hatch, a wide shot from the entry, and a photo tying each detail to a locatable feature. A perfect macro of rotted sill plate nobody can place in the building is worth very little.
