A water loss claim is really an argument about three things: what happened, how far it spread, and when. Your photos are the evidence for all three. The problem is that most people shoot a dozen close-ups of a wet carpet, submit them, and then can't answer the adjuster's follow-up questions — because the answers were never in the frame.

Shoot in three ranges, in this order
Photograph every affected area at three distances before you move on. Skipping a range is the single most common gap in a claim file.
1. Wide — establish the room
Stand in the doorway and capture the entire space, including at least two walls and a recognizable fixed feature: a window, a door frame, a built-in. This is the photo that proves which room the later close-ups came from. Without it, a detail shot of stained drywall is unattributable — it could be anywhere.
2. Medium — show the extent
Frame the full run of the damage. If a water line runs eight feet along a baseboard, one photo should contain all eight feet. Adjusters price repairs by area, and a series of tight shots makes the affected area impossible to estimate without a site visit.
3. Detail — prove the character of the damage
Now go close: swollen laminate seams, a tide line on drywall, corrosion on a fitting, staining on a joist. These shots establish that the damage is real and, often, how long it has been developing.
Put a scale in the frame
A photo of a stain tells an adjuster nothing about its size. Phone cameras flatten depth and distort scale badly at close range, so a two-inch blister and a two-foot blister can look identical.
Include a reference object in at least one shot per area. A folding rule or tape measure extended across the damage is the clearest option because it reads at a glance and cannot be argued with. A coin or a hand works in a pinch, but a measuring tool looks deliberate rather than improvised — which matters when the file is being reviewed skeptically.

Visible staining is the tail end of a water loss. The damage that drives the claim value is usually behind the drywall and under the flooring, and by the time it is visible on the surface it has typically been spreading for a while.
A moisture meter lets you photograph a reading rather than assert a condition. Shoot the meter display against the wall in the same frame as the location being tested — a reading photographed in isolation proves nothing, because there is no way to tell where it was taken. Water damage lives in the places with the worst light: basements, crawl spaces, under sinks, behind appliances, inside closets. Your phone's flash is a single hard point source a few millimeters from the lens, which is close to the worst possible lighting for surface texture. It flattens exactly the thing you are trying to show.
Side-lighting is what makes texture visible. Put a light source off to one side at a shallow angle to the surface and swelling, rippling, and tide lines all become obvious. The same wall shot with direct flash often looks merely discolored.

Coverage frequently turns on cause of loss. A burst supply line, a failed water heater, and a slow leak from a poorly sealed shower pan can produce visually similar damage and be treated very differently by a policy.
So photograph the source directly: the failed fitting, the split hose, the corroded tank seam, the appliance connection. If a part was replaced, photograph the failed component before it leaves the property, including any visible manufacturer markings. That component is often the single most important item in the file, and it is the one most likely to be thrown away by a plumber who is focused on stopping the water.
The timeline problem
Here is the part that catches people out. Insurers evaluate water claims partly on duration, because most policies exclude damage from long-term seepage while covering sudden discharge. That makes "when did this start" a question with real money attached.
And a photo's own metadata is weak evidence for that. The EXIF timestamp in a phone photo is written from the device clock, which the device owner can change. Anyone reviewing a claim adversarially knows this. Re-saving, editing, or sending a photo through a messaging app frequently strips or rewrites that metadata entirely — so a screenshot of a photo, or a picture forwarded through a chat thread, may arrive with no reliable date at all.

- Send originals, not screenshots. Screenshots discard the original metadata and substitute the moment you took the screenshot.
- Avoid re-encoding. Some messaging apps compress and strip metadata on send. Use email attachments at full size, or a file transfer that preserves the original.
- Corroborate externally. A dated service invoice, a utility bill showing a water spike, or a maintenance ticket independently anchors the timeline in a way the photo alone cannot.

Keep shooting after the initial capture
A water claim is not a single event. Mitigation, drying, demolition, and repair all change the property, and each stage is worth documenting:
- Equipment placement — air movers and dehumidifiers, with a photo showing the count and position
- Daily moisture readings during drying, so the drying curve is documented rather than reconstructed
- Anything found behind removed material — mold, rot, prior repairs, compromised framing
- Completed repairs, from the same positions as your original wide shots
Reshooting the completed work from the original camera positions produces genuine before-and-after pairs. Those are disproportionately persuasive, and they cost nothing beyond standing in the same spot.
The mistakes that actually sink claim files
- Only close-ups. No context, so nothing can be located within the property.
- No scale anywhere. Extent becomes a matter of assertion.
- Cleaning up first. Understandable, and it destroys the record. Photograph before you mitigate — then mitigate promptly, because failing to mitigate can itself reduce a claim.
- Screenshots instead of originals. Strips metadata and adds compression artifacts.
- Nothing showing the cause. Leaves the coverage question open.
